Well I guess I’ll use this forum for my opinions on the day’s big events. That seems a little oxy moronic when discussing the NHL and big events but in this case it just might be. Hockey at its best has been an Olympic sport tied to the cold war moment as with the “Miracle on ice” and at its worst as “gang warfare” The truth it’s the worst of the team sports, a poor copy of soccer on ice.
Still the NHL has transcended its place yesterday.
By canceling an entire sports season, something never done before in any sport, it has forever dug a hole it will be buried in.
Although I’m retired I did at a point in my carier, nogotate labor agreements at my place of employement, 4 times infact.
What happened in the case of NHL was 2 sides gave in and no one won. The players gave a cap, the owners gave up linkage, but in the end the dollars were to great and they killed the season and probably their future being the regional sport, at best, that they were.
Yes dollars the owners protected even when not yet earned vs. employees who want what was not yet available, and the limited fan base taxed to supply in the now questioned future.
Sadly in the end, to quote that weird but interesting morning radio jock, Don Imus,”Nobody cares, nobody”
True enough on a day when few were killed in Iraq and no political leaders killed in Lebanon or saber rattling in Washington, that NHL ending was thankfully the story.
OK, shead a few tears for the “collateral”busines’s but they will get by with other means, baseball did.
